BOY Struggles Daily in School Cafeteria, Cries When Lunch Lady Does This

Here we have a touching story of a young man, a school-aged boy who spends every single day of his life struggling with a disability called dwarfism. Julian may be smaller than the rest of the children, but he has got as much life in him as anyone else. Unfortunately, his dwarfism can make life very difficult, especially when it comes to performing regular daily tasks such as picking up his lunch tray in the school cafeteria. However, when one special lunch lady named Anadelia saw Julian’s struggle, she knew that something had to be done once and for all. Keep watching to find out exactly how the school lunch lady managed to make a lasting difference in this young man’s life.

Julian Waram is like any other six-year-old. He likes Super Mario, is learning Taekwondo, and loves hanging out with his older brother. Although Julian loves hanging out with his older brother and playing games, even his brother does not always consider his needs or feelings, especially regarding dwarfism. Sometimes Julian’s older brother Max can be very mean to him and make fun of him for his small stature.

“You’re so short and stout like a little teapot,” Max cheered out loud while he started reciting the words to I’m A Little Teapot.

Julian always hated when Max sang that song because it made him feel really bad about his appearance. He wanted nothing more than to fit in and be the same as all the other kids. Even before he went to school on the morning of our story, he complained to his mom about how Max and the other kids at school mistreated him.

“Mom, Julian’s crying again. He says I’m making fun of him, but I’m not,” Max called out.

“Julian, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” his mother asked.

“It’s not just Max, it’s all the kids at school laughing at me because I’m shorter than them. They always point at me and make jokes,” Julian sobbed.

“Oh, Julian, I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. Remember, your height doesn’t define who you are. You’re special and valuable just like every other child,” his mother comforted him.

“But it’s not just words, Mom. At lunch, I can’t even reach the tray. I have to use this special cart to carry my food and everyone stares at me. They say I look lame. It’s embarrassing,” Julian explained.

“I understand it’s hard, Julian, but using that cart doesn’t make you less than anyone. It’s just a tool to help you. People who make fun of you don’t understand how strong and brave you are,” she replied.

“But I don’t feel strong or brave. I just feel different and left out. Why can’t I just be like everyone else?” Julian cried.

“Being different isn’t a bad thing, Julian. It’s what makes you unique. I know it’s tough, but you are loved and valued for who you are, not for your height,” his mother assured him.

Julian’s mother, Heather, knew all too well that the kids at school always made fun of him, and it was something that she often talked to Brett about. Brett was Julian’s father.

“We really need to do something about Julian. He’s getting sadder and more depressed every day. All the kids at school make fun of him because of his dwarfism, and kids can be so mean. Yesterday he came home from school crying, saying some of the kids started calling him Gimli the Dwarf from The Lord of the Rings. He just hates how he needs that darn cart to get his lunch. It makes him look and feel so different from the other kids. I knew that there was a lot of accommodations that would be needed for school. I had a lot prepared, but I didn’t think of the cafeteria,” Heather said to her husband.

However, Brett really did not know what to do or say. He had always been a man of few words, and thanks to the way he was raised, he was not exactly one to be emotionally connected to those around him. Brett often found it very difficult to convey his emotions and talk to other people on a deeper level, even with his own son. Nonetheless, Brett saw his son was not doing well and offered him some words of encouragement. Sitting down beside Julian, his eyes were downcast, weighed down by the burdens of his day. He took a deep breath, hoping his words could lift some of that weight.

“Julian, look at me, buddy,” Brett said gently.

Julian raised his eyes, and Brett could see the hurt in them.

“I know school is tough and what you’re going through with Max and the other kids is unfair. You’re a great kid, Julian, and nothing they can do or say changes that,” Brett said.

Julian listened, his expression a mix of hope and sadness.

“You’ve got a heart of gold and a mind that’s sharp as a tack. Don’t ever let those bad people make you feel like you’re less than amazing. They just don’t see the world as clearly as you do,” Brett continued, and then paused to make sure Julian was still listening. “One day, Julian, you’re going to grow up and do incredible things just like your old man. You’ll show them just how successful you can be, and it won’t matter one bit how tall you are.”

Brett smiled, but it was there, and in that moment, Brett saw not a boy defined by his challenges, but a young man with limitless potential. At this point, there was nothing more that Brett could do as he also had to leave for work.

“Bye, Julian. Bye, Max. I hope you boys have a great day at school, and don’t forget, Julian, no matter what any of the other kids at school say, you’re special and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise,” Brett said before departing.

So on this day, Julian made his way to school. It always took him much longer to walk to school than the other kids, mainly because his legs were shorter and he ran out of breath quickly. He often wondered if he should take the bus so he would not feel so exhausted by the time he got to school, but that was usually even worse. He had made the mistake of taking the bus to school just a couple of times. Both times he took the school bus, all the kids made fun of him the whole ride to school, and the bus driver did not even do anything about it. Since then, Julian decided that it was just easier to walk to school, although he had to leave his house a full hour before the start of school just to make it in time.

Julian made it to school on this day, and the morning went by like any other. First came math class, then science, reading, and right before lunchtime, gym class. He had always had trouble with gym class. His dwarfism made it so he could not fully engage and participate in many of the activities with the other kids. Julian tried playing dodgeball once, but his limbs were too short; he could not run fast enough to dodge a ball, and he could not throw hard enough to hit someone else with it. It was something that his gym teacher, Mr. Reynolds, noticed and mentioned to some of his fellow staff members, particularly the school lunch lady, Anadelia.

Anadelia was the school’s lunch lady or cafeteria attendant. She had been working at the school for nearly twenty years, and she had never seen anyone struggle quite like Julian. Anadelia and Mr. Reynolds had a short talk about Julian, particularly after an especially rough gym class where the kids really laid into him and called him lots of nasty names.

“Hey, Anadelia, I wanted to talk to you about one of the kids, Julian. It’s really disheartening in gym class. He’s not just struggling, he’s a constant target for mistreatment. The kids don’t let up. It’s relentless teasing because he can’t keep up in sports. They don’t understand his condition at all,” Mr. Reynolds said.

“Oh, poor Julian. I’ve seen him in the cafeteria and it is just as bad. He uses this contraption, well, it’s supposed to be like a cart, but it’s more like a rickety old thing flipped upside down. It’s so dilapidated and odd-looking, it draws attention the moment he enters the room. The kids, they just stare and laugh. He struggles to push it and it is clear he’s embarrassed. It’s heartbreaking to see,” Anadelia replied.

“Exactly the same in my class. They mock him every chance they get. It’s like they don’t see how their words and actions are affecting him. It’s more than just a physical struggle for him, it’s emotional too. We need to do something. This isn’t just about physical assistance, it’s about giving him some dignity back,” Mr. Reynolds expressed.

“Absolutely, Mr. Reynolds. That cart, if you can even call it that, is practically falling apart. It’s an eyesore and it makes Julian stand out in the worst way. The poor boy is trying so hard to be independent and this is what he has to work with. It’s not right. You know, my husband’s quite the handyman. He’s built all sorts of things. Maybe he can design a new cart for Julian, something sturdy, functional, and that doesn’t look like it’s from a junkyard,” Anadelia suggested.

“That’d be amazing, Anadelia. Julian needs something that won’t make him feel like a spectacle. It’s hard enough for him to navigate school with his condition,” Mr. Reynolds stated.

“I’ll talk to my husband tonight. We’ll come up with a plan. Julian needs and deserves our support. Let’s give him a fighting chance to feel normal and accepted. It’s the least we can do for him. I’ll make sure we design something that’s not only practical but also something that he can be proud of using. No child should have to go through what he’s dealing with,” Anadelia said.

“Thank you, Anadelia. That means a lot, and I know it’ll mean the world to Julian. We need more people like you who are willing to step up and make a difference in these kids’ lives. Keep me updated and let me know if there’s anything I can do to help,” Mr. Reynolds concluded.

“Of course, Mr. Reynolds. I’ll get on it right away. It’s time we change Julian’s school experience for the better,” Anadelia promised.

Julian spent the rest of his day being sad and eventually returned back home, where he spent the rest of the day playing video games by himself. However, little did he know that his life was about to change for the better, thanks to Anadelia and her husband’s effort.

When Anadelia got home that night, she talked with her husband about making something for Julian that would be far more practical. Anadelia’s husband was an expert metal worker and craftsman, so she knew that her husband could make it work.

“James, there’s this child at school, Julian, a six-year-old that suffers from dwarfism. He’s such a nice kid but the others all make fun of him, and to make it worse, he has to use this odd-looking cart just to carry his lunch tray. I know, I know you’re always super busy with work, but is there any way that we could design and build a really cool cart for Julian? Something that’ll help him carry his food much easier while not also looking totally ridiculous,” Anadelia described to her husband.

James thought for a few seconds, and before Anadelia could say another word, he exclaimed with joy, “I know exactly what I can do for this young man. I’m going to build him a cart he won’t ever forget. It’s going to be made out of real and solid metal. I’m going to put some cool designs on it and it’ll make it really easy to use too. You’ll see, Anadelia, I’m going to change this kid’s life.”

So James went about building a cart for Julian, something that everyone would remember in a good way. James knew that every day counted for Julian, so he gathered his materials as quickly as he could and began working on the new cart. From the time in between Friday afternoon when Anadelia had come home and talked to James about the issue, and Monday morning when it was time to go back to school, James had managed to build what was likely the coolest cart around.

So with a sense of joy, Anadelia got dressed for school and proceeded to take the new cart with her.

“I really hope Julian likes his new cart and that he can use it easily. You did such a good job, James. I’m so proud that you spent your whole weekend doing something so good and altruistic for someone else, for a child that you’ve never met before. That’s why I married you,” Anadelia said, giving her husband a big kiss before she went off to school to surprise Julian.

For Julian, it was a Monday like any other. He really did not want to go to school. He was afraid of being made fun of all day again, to the point where he even tried faking being sick to get out of school. His mother saw right through the charade, however, and made Julian get ready.

“Mom, I don’t feel so good. I think I have a fever,” Julian complained.

“Julian, let me feel your forehead. You don’t seem to have a fever, and that cough doesn’t sound quite right. Is there something else going on? Why don’t you want to go to school?” his mother questioned.

“It’s just school is hard. The other kids always tease me because I’m different. They laugh at me and I don’t want to go back,” Julian confessed.

“Oh, Julian, I’m sorry you’re going through this, but remember you’re a special person no matter what anyone else says. Those kids just don’t understand,” his mother comforted.

“But it doesn’t feel that way. It feels like everyone’s against me,” Julian sighed.

“I know it’s hard, but things will get better. You have so much to offer and there are people who care about you and see your true value. You’re smart, kind, and brave, even when things are tough,” she said.

“I don’t feel very brave,” Julian muttered.

“Bravery isn’t about not being scared, Julian. It’s about facing your fears even when you are scared. I believe in you. You can face this day and I’ll be right there when you get home. We’ll get through this together, okay?” his mother encouraged.

“Okay, Mom, I’ll try,” Julian agreed.

“That’s my boy. Remember, you’re not alone in this. Now let’s get you ready for school. It’s a new day and who knows, something good might happen today,” she cheered.

Funny enough, neither Julian nor his mother knew the awesome surprise that awaited him at school. When he got to school that morning, it was a day like any other, or so it seemed, but right when he got in the front door, Anadelia was standing there waiting for him with a huge grin on her face.

“Come with me, Julian, I have a big surprise for you,” Anadelia called out.

He was very hesitant because usually when a school staff member tells you to follow them, it means you are in trouble. However, he had not done anything wrong, so he was confused as to why he was now following the lunch lady into the cafeteria. Anadelia stopped in her tracks right before the cafeteria doors and told Julian to close his eyes and hold her hand. Julian did as he was asked, and with his eyes closed, he took Anadelia’s hand and followed her into the cafeteria, completely unaware of what was going to happen next.

Anadelia told him to open his eyes, and when he did, her, Mr. Reynolds, and several other staff members along with a select few students yelled, “Surprise!”

And that was when Julian saw the cart. At first, he did not know that it was for him, but it did look cool.

“Ah, that’s an awesome cart. It looks cool. I wish I had one like that,” Julian whispered.

“Well, Julian, this cart is for you. I had my husband make it especially for you on the weekend, so now lunchtime at school will be much easier,” Anadelia said.

Julian could not believe his eyes. He never thought in a million lifetimes that the lunch lady of the school would be so kind to do something so nice for him. It took a few minutes to sink in, but once it did, he could not get enough of the cart.

“Man, this is the best cart ever. It’s made of real metal and shiny! Man, it even has flames painted on the side of it!” Julian exclaimed.

However, it was not until he walked up behind the cart that he saw the cherry on top: the customized license plate. Yes, Anadelia’s husband had gone out of his way to make a custom license plate for Julian, complete with his name.

“It has my name on it!” Julian gasped.

At this point, Julian could no longer contain his emotions and began to cry with joy. Anadelia wrapped her arms around him.

“Now you can eat lunch in style,” Anadelia smiled.

Julian could not help but yelp and laugh out loud with joy. Now he could finally pick up his lunch tray and walk to his table with his food without looking totally ridiculous. Julian thanked Anadelia profusely and even gave her a huge hug to show his gratitude. He was so proud of his new cart.

“I’m going to come home and show my mom,” Julian declared.

As soon as he got home, he showed his mother what Anadelia and her husband had done for him, and his mother was overjoyed.

“Wow, Julian, look at that! That’s so amazing. I can’t believe there are still such good people in this world. This must definitely make it easier for you to eat lunch with the other kids. And look at those awesome flames, too!” his mother said in awe.

Julian agreed with his mom. He loved the flames, and the rest of the cart was awesome.

Somehow, word of this altruistic deed managed to make its way to the local news outlet, which decided to do a little feel-good story about what had transpired. A local news crew actually showed up to Julian’s house along with Anadelia and her husband, too. The news crew interviewed Anadelia, her husband, Julian, and his mother. Although only small parts of the interview were shown on television, Julian was shown sharing his appreciation.

“I’m so happy the lunch lady at my school and her cool husband built me this really neat cart. It looks so cool and I’m so much happier with it,” Julian said to the camera.

Julian’s mom was also featured in the broadcast.

“I really cannot thank Anadelia and James enough for what they’ve done for my sweet young boy. They’ve really changed his life forever, and this is something that my son won’t soon forget. It’s because of people like Anadelia and James that keep my faith in humanity alive,” she said emotionally.

Anadelia and James responded to the community’s praise humbly.

“It’s nothing at all. I spent close to half a year watching Julian struggle and I just couldn’t watch it anymore. I just knew that I had to do something to help this poor young man, and my husband was the perfect man for the job. It really only took a couple of hours and a few dollars, and we were able to make such a big difference in the life of a deserving child. We’re ecstatic that Julian’s so happy with his new cart,” Anadelia stated.

And with that, our story comes to an end. It is a story of a well-meaning lunch lady who, together with her husband, was able to make a monumental change for the better—a change that would improve a young man’s life in ways they could not even begin to imagine. Help us thank this amazing couple by sharing this story and many others like it.
