February 22, 2024, was Madeline Soto’s birthday. She celebrated it with her family at a relative’s house in Central Florida. Maddie lived with her mother, Jennifer, in the Venetian Bay Village community in Kissimmee, south of Orlando. She attended Hunter Creek Middle School, although her grades weren’t good because she was often distracted.
Teachers reported that she often appeared tired in class, hanging her head and closing her eyes. Friends said that Maddie was often sad and cried for no apparent reason. Sometimes she complained about her mother, described Jennifer as bipolar, and said that they often argued. However, Maddie spoke affectionately to her friends about Jennifer’s partner, Stephan Sterns.
They reported that she was very close to Stephan and often texted him or video-called him throughout the day. On Monday, February 26, the day after Maddie’s birthday party, Jennifer Soto went to Hunter Creek Middle School to pick up her daughter. She waited until the children came home from school, and it quickly became clear that Maddie was not among them.
Assuming Maddie might be with her grandmother, Jen went to her mother’s office, which was next to the school and where Maddie often went after classes. But she wasn’t there either. The school administration checked the attendance lists for all classes and informed Jen that her daughter had not been at school that day.
Jen immediately began searching the neighborhood for Maddie by car and on foot. Around 4:30 p.m., after finding no trace of Maddie, two unknown women called 911 on behalf of the worried mother. Jen and the others waited for the police, as there were no other obvious places to search and Maddie was nowhere to be found. It was nearly 8:00 p.m. when the police arrived at the location where a group of people were with Jen, including her partner, Stephan Sterns. Maddie was supposed to be at school but had never arrived. Teachers are required to report their students’ attendance by 3:30 p.m. However, the automated call informing Jen that Maddie was absent from class didn’t come until 5:45 p.m., after Jen had already frantically searched for her daughter and called for help.
At this point, Maddie had already been missing for almost eight hours. Police learned that Stephan had driven Maddie to school. Jen searched her phone for the last photo of Madelyn, which had been taken the previous day on her birthday. Maddie had left her phone at home that day. According to Jen, this wasn’t unusual for her.
Madelyn only had her school laptop with her, and it could be located even though it hadn’t been switched on from Sunday until the day she disappeared. Officers began to piece together a timeline of Maddie’s last known movements. They learned that Stephan was supposed to drive her to school that morning. Normally, Maddie was taken to school by her mother or grandparents.
Although her biological father maintained contact with her, he was not actively involved in her life. Stephan claimed he had taken on the role of father. According to him, Maddie had asked him not to drop her off directly in front of the school building, but a little further away so she could walk the rest of the way. Stephan stated that after saying goodbye, he watched Maddie check her backpack.
She said she would look for her friends and wait for them. Jen told police she had seen Maddie the previous evening around 11:00 PM when her daughter and Stephan were sleeping in the same bed. Jennifer explained that the three of them usually slept in one bed as a family.
Because of her new job, however, she had started sleeping separately to get more rest. When asked if this was common practice, she gave different answers in various interviews. Once she said it was rare. Another time she admitted it wasn’t unusual. She said it didn’t bother her. She also explained that she had initially observed Maddie and Stephan’s interaction very closely, but had become less vigilant over time.
They had been together for about seven years, and during that time Stephan and Maddie had become very close. The description of Stephan’s morning drives immediately became a central part of the investigation. The 38-year-old man led police to a spot near a church where he claimed to have dropped Maddie off so she could walk the rest of the way to school. At first, the story seemed plausible.
A camera was installed outside the church. Police reviewed the footage and saw that around 8:40 a.m., a girl entered the church grounds and sat down in the parking lot. At 8:58 a.m., the person stood up and walked toward the school. However, the footage was of extremely poor quality, making it impossible to definitively determine whether it was Madelyn. Even her clothing was barely recognizable.
Furthermore, the footage showed the vehicle that had dropped the person off, and it appeared to be a dark sedan, not a silver Lincoln. Traffic cameras had indeed captured Stephan’s car near the school that morning. However, as his vehicle approached the school, he appeared to turn around and drive in the opposite direction.
The Orange County Sheriff organized a large-scale search for Madelyn. More than 50 members of the search and rescue team combed trails and wooded areas near the school. Search dogs trained to detect Madelyn’s scent scoured the paths, while ATVs and horses were used for rough terrain.
Police were able to access Madelyn’s phone data and found information indicating that she had previously expressed a desire to live in the woods. Jen and Stephan contacted local media to spread information about her disappearance. Police tracked Stephan’s movements using CCTV footage and noted several irregularities in his route. At 7:30 a.m., he was filmed throwing something into a dumpster next to his house. He then drove to a vape shop that was still closed, returned home, and then drove back to the same shop. He also stated that he drove past the video game store “House Rules,” but the cameras did not capture him there.
While Stephan explained why his car had been filmed at various locations in the Orange and Osceola counties, he was never recorded entering a restaurant or shop. Sometime between noon and 2 p.m., the 38-year-old man had to change a flat tire. He stated that he pulled over to the right of the highway on a lightly trafficked country road to change the tire, but could not specify the exact location.
Although cameras recorded his journey in the area, they were unable to reconstruct his entire route. A search warrant was obtained for Stephan’s house and car. Stephan stated that he had accidentally reset his mobile phone to factory settings twice on the day of Maddie’s disappearance. Investigators also traced the garbage from the container to the point where it was dumped.
Forensic investigators found a piece of tire tread in the trash that matched the rear passenger-side tire of Stephan’s car. Next to this tire was a white garbage bag that Stephan had thrown into the container around 7:30 a.m. before driving to school. Inside the bag were a black backpack with a purple Hawaiian pattern and a white Croc shoe.
The second shoe was found in one of the house’s bedrooms. The backpack contained a school laptop from Orange County Public School named Soto. Investigators concluded that Maddie had not been dropped off near the school on the morning of February 26. Instead, they believed she was already dead at that time. Stephan returned to his car after disposing of the white garbage bag. This was captured on camera.
The video itself was not released. According to police, a girl wearing a green hoodie was seen in the passenger seat of the car. Her head was tilted to the left. A police report stated:
“The girl was in an unusual position for a seated person.”
At approximately 8:20 a.m., Stephan drove out of the gate of the apartment complex after briefly speaking with the security guard. A little over an hour later, after driving his female passenger to various locations, he pulled his car into the underground parking garage of a Holiday Inn. There he parked. According to police, surveillance cameras in the garage showed the driver getting out of the vehicle, lifting his body from the passenger seat, and placing it in the trunk.
The car then left the garage. Stephan’s car was seen on Old Hickory Tree Road. Later that same day, he stopped somewhere in the area to change a tire. Around 4:40 p.m., he returned to the apartment complex and disposed of the tire in a dumpster. At about the same time, Jen was at Hunter Creek School, desperately trying to find her daughter. Stephan Sterns was arrested and taken into custody.
Initially, the arrest was not related to the murder. Investigators discovered a phone belonging to Stephan. A linked Google Drive account was found containing over 1,700 shocking, sexually explicit images and videos from 2022 and 2023, many of which depicted Madelyn. This material provided irrefutable evidence of years of abuse.
Stephan was charged with sexual abuse and other crimes. In fact, due to recent changes in Florida law, he could have faced the death penalty if the files had been created just a few months later. The law allowing the death penalty for such crimes was signed in December 2023. On Friday, March 26, law enforcement received a tip that Stephan Sterns had been seen changing a flat tire in the Old Hickory Tree Road area of St. Cloud.
A witness stated that he saw him next to his car, very close to where he was last captured on a surveillance camera. When investigators drove in that direction on the afternoon of February 26, the sheriff’s office contacted the owner of a property across a roadway at approximately 4:30 p.m. A locked gate was located on the opposite side of the road from where Stephan had presumably stopped.
After the gate was opened, the officers went to the left, where tall bamboo trees grew. There, the captain noticed a pair of blue jeans just a few feet from the bamboo. Under the trees, the investigators discovered what appeared to be a body. The torso was covered with a green cloth. The person was wearing blue jeans. It looked as if someone had covered the girl with hay or dry grass.
It was later confirmed that the girl found among the trees was Madelyn Soto. Due to the suspected circumstances of the incident, the official cause of death was not initially released. However, local media, citing information from the medical examiner, reported that Madelyn likely died of asphyxiation. One of the deputy sheriffs stated that Jennifer initially claimed she last saw her daughter that morning around 8:00 a.m. as she was getting ready for school.
Later, however, Jen claimed she hadn’t seen her daughter at all that morning. According to the Kissimmee Police Department, Jen’s claim is not credible in this case, and she is not considered a suspect. Detective Morris, who led the investigation after the materials were discovered on Stephan’s cloud storage, showed Jen some of these images.
The detective noted that when confronted with the photos, Jen denied recognizing the people depicted. He observed that the images clearly showed what was happening. Nevertheless, Jen insisted she couldn’t recognize anything, almost as if she were in a state of repression. Stephan Sterns was charged with first-degree murder in the Madelyn Soto case.
Later, he refused to appear in court, expressing his dissatisfaction with the conditions of his detention in the county jail. The state of Florida announced it would seek the death penalty. Legal experts speculated that if Stephan decided to appear in court, it would only be to avoid the death penalty.
In 2011, a new chapter began for 16-year-old Sabrina Zunich, at least on paper. After a childhood marked by instability, frequent changes of foster families, and mental health issues, she was placed in the care of the Knöfel family in Ohio. Lisa Knöfel, a social worker, took Sabrina into her home. A woman with seemingly unwavering patience, she had already worked professionally with troubled youth. Now she wanted to help in her personal life as well.
Sabrina moved into a well-kept suburban house—a typical American home. The lawn is mowed, two cars are parked in the driveway, and family photos adorn the walls. Lisa lives there with her husband, Kevin, and their two biological daughters. From the outside, everything seems orderly and stable. But Sabrina quickly senses that, although she has been taken in, she will never truly belong. The girls regard her with skepticism.
Kevin is friendly but distant. Only Lisa makes an effort to create closeness, structure, and a sense of family. Sabrina struggles with inner demons. She has a long history of mental health issues. Medication is a constant companion. At school, she’s considered unstable. Her mood fluctuates, sometimes aggressive, sometimes withdrawn. But in her new family, she tries, at least initially.
She goes to school, helps around the house, and tries to fit in. But the harder she tries, the more excluded she feels. The family’s perfect facade becomes a daily reminder that she doesn’t belong. Over the months, a special dynamic develops between Sabrina and Kevin Knöfel.
At first, he’s a father figure to her: attentive, understanding, and charming. He begins to give her more attention than necessary. Small gifts, longer conversations, lingering glances, words that go beyond a normal father-daughter relationship. Sabrina, insecure and searching for reassurance, begins to grow emotionally closer to him.
What begins as apparent care gradually develops into a dangerous relationship. Lisa initially notices nothing, or perhaps chooses not to see it. Her trust in her husband is immense. Her time is consumed by her job, housework, and her own children. The fact that a catastrophe is brewing in her own home remains hidden from her. With each passing month, the relationship between Kevin Knöfel and Sabrina changes.
Initial trust transforms into a game of closeness and control. Kevin, himself a police officer, knows exactly how to build trust and how to exploit it. Behind closed doors, he begins to manipulate Sabrina’s insecurities for his own purposes. Their conversations become more personal, more emotional, more intimate, and ultimately sexual.
Torn apart inside, Sabrina believes she has found an ally in Kevin. Someone who understands her, who doesn’t judge her, who offers her comfort. She believes she is loved. In reality, however, she begins to completely distance herself from Lisa, her foster mother, the woman who actually wanted to help her. In Sabrina’s eyes, Lisa becomes a rival, an obstacle.
Kevin fosters this idea. He speaks ill of his wife, describing her as cold, unhappy, and unloving, and he talks about a future with Sabrina. What happens within the walls of their house remains invisible to the outside world. But the dynamic is changing. Lisa notices that Sabrina is becoming increasingly withdrawn, that her behavior is becoming more aggressive and distant.
Tensions and arguments arise. Lisa considers returning the girl to her foster mother and wants to involve child protective services. She feels overwhelmed, perhaps even threatened, but hesitates. Out of a sense of duty, perhaps also out of compassion. Kevin, on the other hand, seems calm. Outwardly, he is the level-headed family man. In his conversations with Sabrina, however, he becomes more direct.
He starts talking about a life without Lisa, about money, about freedom, about the $75,000 life insurance policy Lisa took out. For Sabrina, young, manipulated, and mentally unstable, it sounds like a promise. A path to a new life, the kind she dreams of, with Kevin by her side. A resolve begins to form within her.
A mere idea becomes a plan, and the plan soon becomes an action. November 16, 2012, begins like any ordinary Friday morning in the suburbs of Willoughby Hills, Ohio. It’s cold. The Knöfel family home is still quiet in the twilight. Lisa got up early. Her daughters are still asleep. Kevin is out of the house, officially on duty. Sabrina, however, is awake. Awake and determined.
Around 6:00 a.m., she went into the bathroom, armed with a knife she had taken from the kitchen. She was wearing gloves. Her gaze was blank. She entered Lisa Knöfel’s bedroom, where she was still lying in bed. Within seconds, a brutal, shocking act began.
Sabrina lunges at the woman she once wanted to take in, stabbing her repeatedly with merciless force. Lisa fights back, screams for help, but she is surprised and physically outmatched. The house becomes noisy. One of the daughters wakes up and sees what is happening. She runs to a telephone and calls the police. Sabrina doesn’t flee. She stands still, breathing heavily, staring at what she has done.
When the police arrived a short time later, officers found Lisa Knöfel lifeless in bed with more than 150 stab wounds. The crime scene was gruesome. The bedroom a scene of horror. Blood on the walls, on the floor, and on Sabrina’s clothing. She was arrested at the scene. Calmly, without resistance. Almost as if she had expected exactly that, as if it were the logical endpoint of a story that could never have ended well.
In her first statement, she mentions a single motive:
“Kevin wanted it that way.”
Investigators are faced with a disturbing case. A foster daughter murders her caregiver with extreme violence. But it quickly becomes clear that Sabrina didn’t act alone. Her mental state, her relationship with Kevin, and her motives all point to a deeper, darker dynamic—and to a man who knew far more than he initially admitted.
In the aftermath of the crime, a wave of investigations begins, shattering the image of a seemingly normal family. Sabrina Zunich is interrogated, initially calmly, almost mechanically. But with each passing hour, more details come to light, along with a dark web of manipulation, lies, and emotional abuse. Sabrina explains that she acted not out of hatred, but out of love.
Out of love for Kevin Knöfel. She describes how he made her feel special, how he systematically distanced her from Lisa, how he convinced her that Lisa was the only thing standing between them. And finally, she recounts how he repeatedly hinted at the idea of a life together with casual remarks—a life together if Lisa were no longer there—until this thought matured within her, took shape, and finally became an act.
The police are alarmed because Kevin had taken out a life insurance policy on his wife, and the question arises: Was the murder merely an emotional outburst from a mentally unstable teenager, or part of a calculated plan? Kevin Knöfel is summoned for questioning. He appears shocked and distraught, playing the role of the grieving husband. But the investigators have their doubts.
There are too many inconsistencies. Sabrina reports clear allusions, conversations about their life together afterward. She speaks of intimate moments and promises Kevin made to her, of messages that no longer exist because they were deleted. The investigators apply for search warrants.
They examine Kevin’s computer, his cell phone, and his work documents and find clues. Although many messages are deleted, fragments remain. They obtain evidence. In several chat logs, they discover hints of an inappropriate relationship. The language is ambiguous, but clear enough to arouse suspicion. Kevin denies everything.
He says Sabrina fell in love with him, but he never reciprocated her feelings. She misunderstood everything. But suspicion remains and is reinforced when Sabrina makes a full confession, describing in detail how Kevin manipulated her and drove her to commit the crime. She describes details that only someone in close contact with Kevin could know.
She describes not only conversations but also intimate situations. She says Kevin repeatedly assured her that everything would be better once Lisa was gone, that he would take care of everything, that she had nothing to fear. Meanwhile, Kevin’s public image is increasingly shaky. Tensions are running high at his police station. The media are reporting extensively.
A police officer is accused of manipulating a teenager and involving him in a murder. Suspicion grows, but evidence is scarce. Kevin officially remains a free man. Sabrina, however, remains in custody for the time being. She seems broken, but also determined. She wants to talk, to tell everything, and she begins to cooperate.
Not out of remorse, but because she feels betrayed, because she believes Kevin manipulated her, exploited her, and then abandoned her. Sabrina’s comprehensive confession decisively changes the course of the investigation. What initially appeared to be the spontaneous murder of a mentally unstable teenager increasingly reveals itself to be the final stage of a months-long, insidious game.
It was orchestrated by a man who was simultaneously a husband, father, police officer, and seducer. The public prosecutor’s office is beginning to systematically compare the statements of those involved with digital evidence and witness testimonies. Investigators are speaking with teachers, students, and neighbors. Some recall unusual tensions in the Knöfel household, others Sabrina’s erratic behavior.
A teacher recounts a conversation a few weeks before the murder, in which Sabrina vaguely suggested that things would soon get better. Only now, in retrospect, does this statement take on a dark meaning. Sabrina’s lawyer realizes early on that his client’s only chance of a reduced sentence is her full cooperation. Sabrina agrees to testify against Kevin, even secretly.
But there are no formal charges against him yet. The justice system is proceeding cautiously. The charge is incitement to murder. But Kevin continues to deny everything. He claims he was merely being friendly. Sabrina fell in love with him, but he never reciprocated her feelings. His chat messages, he insists, were misunderstood.
What he considered harmless jokes are now being interpreted as evidence. But gradually, a picture begins to emerge. Chat messages later analyzed by investigators contained sentences like:
“I wish we could just be together.”
As well as hints of how life would change without Lisa.
These sentences initially appear subtle, but take on a terrifying meaning in the context of the crime. Investigators confront Kevin with their contents. His answers become increasingly evasive. Nevertheless, he remains free for the time being. There is no direct evidence that he specifically planned or commissioned the murder.
Meanwhile, Sabrina is officially charged with first-degree murder. She faces a life sentence. However, due to her cooperation and the incriminating background of the manipulation, her lawyer requests a reduced sentence. The public debates: Is Sabrina the perpetrator or a victim herself? A girl with mental health issues, manipulated by a grown man who first exploited her emotionally and later physically.
A court-commissioned psychological evaluation determined that Sabrina suffered from emotional dependency and diminished judgment. She did not act entirely of her own volition, but was under the influence of a relationship characterized by unhealthy manipulation from the outset. But how much mitigation of guilt can such a history justify? And is Kevin truly the cold-blooded mastermind, or merely a morally dubious man whose behavior had catastrophic consequences? The court would ultimately decide. But for Sabrina, one thing was clear: if she wanted any hope for the future, she had to tell the whole truth and bring down her former ally.
The trial against Sabrina Zunich began in the summer of 2014. The young woman entered the courtroom with her head bowed. Her long, dark hair fell loosely over her shoulders. The cameras were focused on her.
But she didn’t seem like a calculating killer, more like a lost girl who had been thrust far too early into a life of pain and confusion. She confessed without hesitation. Yes, she had killed Lisa. Yes, she had taken the knife, gone into the bedroom, and stabbed her repeatedly.
But she also said:
“I didn’t do it alone.”
Sabrina Zunich was sentenced to life imprisonment. Her plea of guilt spared her a full trial. Nevertheless, the court ruled that the brutality of the crime and her role in it precluded a more lenient sentence. Early release is possible after a minimum of 30 years.
She repeatedly emphasizes the role Kevin Knöfel played in her life. Her testimony becomes central to everything that follows. While Sabrina is convicted, Kevin is eventually charged. The charges: seducing a minor into an inappropriate sexual relationship with a foster daughter and incitement to murder. The evidence is not absolutely conclusive.
There is no audio recording or message containing a clear incitement to the crime. However, Sabrina’s statement is detailed and internally consistent. Furthermore, it corroborates numerous pieces of circumstantial evidence. During Kevin’s trial, a pattern increasingly emerges. He had corresponded not only with Sabrina but also with other young women.
The pattern was always the same: show interest, build a close relationship, and exploit weaknesses. The jury realized that this wasn’t just a mistake, but systematic abuse. In the subsequent trial, Kevin Knöfel was convicted not only of the sexual relationship with Sabrina Zunich, but also of incitement to murder. The jury concluded that he had deliberately manipulated the psychologically vulnerable girl with promises, innuendo, and a gradual preparation for the crime.
The court found it proven that Kevin had manipulated Sabrina for his own purposes and deliberately staged the crime. The justice system was certain that he was not merely a victim of circumstances, but a mastermind. Kevin Knöfel received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years. He was convicted of incitement to murder and sexual abuse of a minor.
For many, however, the verdict remained unsatisfactory. A woman was dead, a teenager psychologically devastated, and a police officer had abused his position in the most gruesome way. Sabrina Zunich remained in prison. In later interviews, she said she deeply regretted her actions but was convinced that she would never have been capable of them without Kevin.
What remains is the tragic story of a girl who met the wrong person in a flawed system, and the story of a family who paid the ultimate price.
The woman was found dead in her own home. In the first months of the investigation, the police had about 100 suspects.
Nevertheless, they couldn’t find the perpetrator. This went on for eight years until investigators received a completely unexpected tip that turned the case on its head and helped bring the surprising truth to light. Linda Jensen was born on June 16, 1952, in Minneapolis. Her parents had four children, two boys and two girls.
Linda was especially close to her older sister. They loved playing together, going for walks in nature, and skateboarding. In the following years, Linda became very active in sports. She regularly went jogging in the mornings, swam, and even rode horses. When she was 18, she married a boy named Charlie. They had known each other since childhood.
Every year, Linda’s parents rented a holiday home in the countryside, and the whole family spent most of the summer there. Charlie’s parents owned the house. Two years after their wedding, she had a son. Ultimately, however, the marriage failed. Charlie, who had served in Vietnam, increasingly turned to alcohol to numb the memories of those events.
This led to serious problems in her marriage. After seven years, Linda decided to file for divorce and retained custody of her child. Four years later, she began dating a man named Robert. Together they had a son. But this relationship also didn’t last long. Shortly after the boy’s birth, Robert and Linda separated, leaving Linda alone with two children.
Four years later, she met a man named John and they married. The couple moved to California. Two years later, they decided to divorce, and Linda returned to Minneapolis. Shortly after her return, she reconnected with her first husband, Charlie. By this time, her son was grown and had moved out, and Linda was raising her younger son on her own.
Meanwhile, Charlie had overcome his drinking problems. He and Linda admitted that they had never stopped loving each other all these years. In 1991, the 20th anniversary of their first wedding, they married again, and just a few months later their daughter was born. The four of them settled in a small, quiet town called Big Lake in a remote area.
In the following months, Linda devoted all her time to caring for her daughter and youngest son. It seemed as if a new, happy life lay ahead for her family. But one day everything changed abruptly. On February 24, 1992, when Linda was 39 years old, the morning began as usual for her and her husband.
Charlie woke up early and went to work, while his wife stayed home to look after their daughter, who was not yet a year old. Their nine-year-old son had gone to school, so they spent the morning alone with the girl. Around 4:00 p.m., the police received a call from Charlie.
His voice trembling, he said he had just found his wife murdered, and officers were going to their house. According to Charlie, he arrived home from work as usual and saw Linda’s son, who had just returned from school, and their daughter, who was lying in her playpen. The man noticed that the girl was wearing the same clothes she had been wearing that morning when he had said goodbye to her.
This struck him as odd, considering how much time had passed. Even stranger was the fact that Linda was nowhere to be seen, and her son said he hadn’t seen his mother since returning from school. Charlie added that he had called home several times from work, but Linda hadn’t answered.
At the time, he had assumed she was simply busy and hadn’t given it any further thought. But now the whole thing worried him. He began searching the house for his wife and finally came to her bedroom. When Charlie opened the door, he was met with a horrific sight. Linda was lying on the floor, partially covered by a sheet, and a large knife was protruding from her chest, right through the sheet.
When the police pulled back the sheet, they discovered that the victim was completely naked and had numerous stab wounds. As for the knife itself, investigators quickly determined that it came from Linda’s kitchen. Despite the numerous wounds, however, the medical examiners concluded that the cause of death was asphyxiation. Apparently, the perpetrator had first induced suffocation and only then inflicted all these stab wounds.
They also found traces of a sexual assault and secured biological material from the perpetrator. However, they had not yet been able to order a DNA analysis, as this technology was still in its infancy. The experts also determined that Linda’s time of death was likely between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., just a few hours after her husband had left for work. By that time, her son had already left for school, and she was at home with her daughter.
Police checked all windows and doors but found no signs of forced entry. There were also no obvious signs of a struggle inside the house, as if the victim had willingly let the killer in and hadn’t expected the attack until the very last moment.
Investigators found no evidence of a robbery, apart from one curious detail. The only thing missing from the house was the bedding from the bed in the victim’s bedroom, where her body was found. It’s possible the perpetrator committed the crime on the bed and decided to dispose of the bedding as a precaution, fearing it might leave traces.
Thus, everything indicated that the perpetrator not only knew the victim personally but also harbored a deep hatred for her. He repeatedly stabbed her after she was already dead and literally nailed the bedsheet to her body. Experts could find no foreign fingerprints on the knife or anywhere else.
The relationship eventually ended. Police learned that Robert hadn’t had any contact with anyone after their breakup. He had shown great interest in spending time with his son. Over all these years, the child had practically never seen him. However, an interesting fact came to light. Charlie revealed that just a few weeks before the murder, Robert had suddenly contacted Linda and explained that he had decided to rebuild his relationship with his son.
The woman reacted very negatively. Aside from the fact that her son barely remembered Robert, the man also abused alcohol and illegal substances. Linda didn’t want the boy to know about any of this, and there were several quite heated arguments between her and Robert on the phone.
Investigators suspected that Robert might have killed Linda because she had forbidden him from seeing his son. They summoned him for questioning, and almost immediately his behavior aroused even more suspicion. Robert claimed he hadn’t had any contact with Linda for several years, although Charlie said this was far from the truth. The man also had no alibi.
He said he had been at home, but no one could confirm this. Shortly afterward, he refused to answer investigators’ questions altogether and hired a lawyer. Even so, the police had no evidence of his involvement, and without it, they could do nothing. Investigators did not remove him from the list of suspects and continued to investigate Roberts’ possible involvement for some time.
But eventually, they had to continue. They began investigating Linda’s second husband, John, with whom she had moved to California. After speaking with the woman’s family, the investigators learned that John was quite aggressive and quick-tempered. He constantly started arguments and had even hit Linda once.
After this incident, she filed for divorce and returned to Minnesota. However, investigators quickly determined that John was in California at the time of the murder, teaching at the school where he worked. Therefore, he simply did not have the physical opportunity to commit the crime. Investigators did not rule out the possibility that he might have hired someone else to do it, but they could find no evidence to support this theory.
In the following months, police investigated nearly 100 different men they believed might be connected to the murder. Each time, however, the investigations yielded nothing. Over time, Linda’s case faded into obscurity and was eventually closed. Her family continued to contact investigators several times a month, but each time received the same response: there was no progress in Linda’s case. Her older sister, Sandy, fought most actively to bring the truth to light.
She was in constant contact with journalists, gave interviews, and did everything in her power to prevent Linda’s case from being forgotten. This continued until 1999, when a new sheriff took office at the local police station. He decided to reopen old unsolved cases, including Linda’s murder.
Seven years had passed since then, and DNA analysis had become widespread across the country. Investigators sent a semen sample from the perpetrator to a laboratory, and experts created his biological profile, which they then compared with that of all the suspects. First, they compared it with the DNA of Charlie, Robert, and John. The investigators had no doubt about the innocence of the two (married) men, as they had solid alibis. Robert, however, remained a suspect.
As we recall, he had told the police, for some reason, that he hadn’t had any contact with the victim for several years. But investigators knew that the two had spoken on the phone just a few weeks before her murder. His DNA also didn’t match the perpetrator’s, which is why he was eventually removed from the list.
After that, investigators began requesting samples from other suspects, exceeding 80 in number, and all agreed to provide them voluntarily. Experts found not a single match, meaning that seven years after the murder, police were no closer to identifying the perpetrator.
When the killer’s sample was entered into the FBI database, there were no matches. Eventually, the police offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. But even that yielded no usable leads. The case then stalled for another year until a rather unexpected turn of events occurred. A woman named Angela called the police and said she had a suspicion about who might have killed Linda. According to this woman, she did not know the victim personally.
During those years, however, Angela was in a relationship with a man named Kent Jones. Shortly after the incident, she began to consider the possibility that he might be behind the murder. To her surprise, the investigators immediately recognized the name, as Jones had appeared in the files since the early days of the investigation, albeit not as a suspect.
The man was Linda’s neighbor. He lived just under a kilometer from her house, and the police asked him a series of standard questions. At the time, however, he said he knew nothing and did not know the victim. Jones lived there with his wife and four children. The man was a Boy Scout leader, regularly attended church with his family, and was a respected member of the community.
According to Angela, he had a secret affair with her in 1992. But that was only the beginning of her story. The woman recounted that a few weeks after Linder’s murder, she decided to discuss it with Jones, knowing he was her neighbor. The man replied that he didn’t know Linda and had never seen her.
Angela noticed, however, that his behavior changed abruptly. He became visibly angry, and she couldn’t understand why. Several months later, the subject of the murder came up again in a conversation between the two. This time, Jones suddenly explained that he had spoken to Linda shortly before her death and had also regularly seen her walking past his house in the mornings.
Angela found these changes in the man’s story extremely suspicious, and ever since, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Jones might have had something to do with her murder. Shortly afterward, they broke up. The woman hesitated for a long time before sharing her suspicions with anyone. Only years later did she finally muster the courage to call the police.
The investigators were intrigued by her story and began to look into Jones more closely. They discovered that the man had a prior conviction for insurance fraud. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. They found numerous records indicating that Jones had been repeatedly charged with domestic violence. He regularly beat his wife and had even been arrested for it. Yet each time, his wife refused to press charges.
On one occasion, the woman was even admitted to hospital with a stab wound, and she told police she had accidentally fallen onto a kitchen knife sticking out of the dishwasher. Given the history of domestic violence in her family, police suspected her husband had inflicted the wound.
But without the woman’s statement, they could do nothing. After the investigators had reviewed all this information, they began to consider his possible involvement. If Angela’s statement was true, the man had lied to the police when he claimed never to have seen the victim, and that alone was enough to put him on the list of suspects.
In 1992, he had also told them he was at home at the time of the murder, and his wife corroborated this statement. However, investigators had serious doubts about the credibility of his wife’s account, as she consistently forgave her husband for beatings and defended him to the police. Now, eight years later, investigators visited him at his home to ask him the same questions. He was still living in the same house with his wife, and the police began…
He might have said he wanted to talk about her son joining the Boy Scouts, or something similar. The prosecutor argued that Jones then tried to persuade Linda to have sex with him, which she refused. The man then attacked and raped her, and subsequently stabbed her multiple times with a kitchen knife to ensure she was dead. The jury ultimately reached a unanimous verdict.
The man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole after 30 years, at the earliest in 2030. Shortly afterward, Jones’s lawyers filed an appeal, arguing that the judge had wrongly prevented them from naming other individuals as suspects. The lawyers believed the murder could have been committed by Robert, the father of her younger son, as well as by a man who frequented the same gym as Linda and harbored feelings for her.
The judge, however, ruled that the evidence of her involvement was insufficient and therefore forbade the lawyers from mentioning her in court. The appeals court reviewed the case extensively and ruled in Jones’s favor in 2004. The man’s conviction was overturned. A new trial was scheduled.
This began two years later, and Jones again changed his account of events. While he had previously claimed that he and Linda had had an intimate relationship the day before the murder, he now asserted that this had actually occurred on the morning of the murder. His new version of events thus aligned with the expert’s report, which had determined that the semen could not have been older than 24 hours.
The prosecution insisted there was absolutely no evidence that Linda had cheated on her husband, and all her relatives testified that she would never have done such a thing. Jones then stated, with a straight face, that he was quite a skilled lover and that women simply couldn’t resist him. His lawyers even called his wife as a witness to support this statement.
She testified, however, that Jones was actually quite bad in bed. Ultimately, he was found guilty again, and this time the court rejected his subsequent appeal. This left Jones with virtually no further legal recourse to challenge the verdict. But in 2015, something unexpected happened. Remember the expert who determined that the perpetrator’s sperm couldn’t have been left the day before the victim’s death? His name was Michael McGee, and he ran a private practice in his own laboratory.
The man had 30 years of experience and had earned a reputation as one of the most talented medical experts in the state. Over time, however, his work began to raise questions, leading to an independent investigation that rightly drew some interesting conclusions. The reviewers of this investigation found that the expert’s results were far from the most accurate and reliable.
To put the core of the problem simply, it was this: McGee was accused of using methods for examining traces that lacked sufficient scientific basis and whose accuracy was seriously questioned by the scientific community. Let’s take Linda’s case as an example.
Dr. McGee worked there as an expert witness who determined the victim’s time of death to be between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. using a test to detect a specific enzyme found in semen. The test was intended to show how long the perpetrator’s biological material had been in the victim’s body, thus helping to pinpoint the exact time of death. However, the problem was that the test’s reliability in this particular case was very low, and many experts consider it completely unsuitable for trace analysis.
This enzyme is also found in the human body, which is why the test can easily produce false results. That said, it wasn’t outright fraud on Dr. McGee’s part, but his use of questionable methods meant that all the cases he had worked on throughout his long career had to be reviewed.
There were more than 200 cases, and in some instances, convictions even had to be overturned. Naturally, Jones’s lawyers didn’t miss this opportunity and demanded their client’s conviction be overturned. In this particular case, however, it was to no avail. The problem for him was that the DNA analysis still showed a match between the sperm and Jones’s biological sample, and there was no doubt about the accuracy of this test.
He is currently still serving his sentence and will be eligible for early release in a few years. However, the likelihood of this being granted is quite low. Finally, it should be noted that Jones might have continued to escape punishment if Angela had not informed investigators of her suspicions.
His name had already appeared in the files since 1992. But during all that time, no one even remotely suspected his involvement, until this tip came in. And it could have gone on like that for a long time.
The story of Daniela Espitia Flores began as an ordinary teenage romance, but ended in a tragedy that shook all of Colombia.
Her disappearance and the events that followed became the subject of a high-profile investigation that painted a disturbing picture of domestic violence, control, and systemic inaction. Daniela was born in 1998 in the vibrant and populous city of Barranquilla. She was the fourth of five children of Janis Patricia Flores, who raised her sons and daughters with the help of her mother and other relatives.
Nothing is known about Daniela’s father. She was described as an open, cheerful, and warm-hearted girl who loved to dance, radiated a positive energy that spread to those around her, and always tried to bring joy to her family. Her relatives considered her the heart and soul of the family and especially praised her attentiveness, her ability to organize surprises, and her heartfelt birthday wishes.
She had known Daimer Diaz Mendoza, who was five years older than her, since childhood. Their childhood friendship gradually developed into a relationship. Little is known about his past. He lived with his grandmother and attempted to complete a technical apprenticeship, but never finished. Their relationship progressed rapidly.
Despite their young age, they married. And Daniela became a mother before she was even 16. Three years later, her second daughter was born. Motherhood completely changed her life. While her peers went to the movies or for walks, she stayed home with her children. All her decisions revolved around their well-being.
According to her mother, Daniela was able to balance work and raising her children well. She was attentive and caring. She did everything to ensure her daughters had everything they needed. But her partner was the complete opposite: aggressive, unstable, and addicted to illegal substances. From the beginning of their relationship, he displayed violent behavior that became increasingly dangerous over the years. He repeatedly threatened to kill her, plunging her into a state of constant fear.
The situation became unbearable. At the age of 19, Daniela decided to protect herself and her daughters and left him. She hoped the nightmare would end, but even the separation brought her no peace. Daniela was determined to make a fresh start. She found a job as a consultant in a mobile phone shop and planned to resume her studies, as she dreamed of a university degree.
She longed for a quiet life far away from Daimer, convinced she deserved a second chance. But the separation didn’t end her suffering. The tensions didn’t disappear. On the contrary, they intensified. New outbursts of violence followed. Finally, things reached a point where Daniela had to seek legal help and file a report for domestic violence.
Despite financial difficulties, she did everything she could to ensure the well-being of her daughters and her mother, with whom she had a warm and close relationship. Outwardly, she remained cheerful and friendly, always smiling, but behind closed doors, she struggled with the reality that a dangerous and unpredictable person continued to be a part of her life.
Her family knew that her relationship with Daimer was difficult and understood how much she constantly had to restrain herself. Aside from his outbursts of aggression, Daimer displayed complete irresponsibility when it came to securing his livelihood. He claimed to work as a driver for his uncle to pay the bills.
However, with the onset of the pandemic, he lost his job, and the situation became even more difficult. He later found employment at a company in the center of Barranquilla, but things didn’t go well there either, due to his addiction to illegal substances and his tendency towards conflict. Despite everything, his family tried to support him and… get him out of this situation.
But he remained trapped in a vicious cycle from which he could not, or would not, escape. During the same period, Daniela filed several more complaints with the authorities. In two cases, the public prosecutor’s office initiated proceedings. Three further complaints were registered with the Family Services Office. She filed her last complaint on May 8 in a desperate attempt to stop Daimer’s aggression.
At that time, Daniela’s mother became seriously ill and had to be hospitalized. After her discharge, Daniela moved in with her to care for her. Relatives recalled that she feared nothing more in the world than losing her mother, which is why she never left her side. These weeks brought them even closer.
She spent a lot of time at home with her sister Eliana, baking desserts, trying out recipes from the internet, and cooking dishes she had long wanted to try. In those days, there was a real closeness between them. But on August 17, 2020, everything changed. On Monday morning, Daniela left the house without saying where she was going.
Before she left, she assured her family that she would be back soon. Confidently, she went downstairs to the house of her neighbor, who often helped her look after her daughters. She left the children there and walked away, unaware that she was seeing them for the last time. According to her mother, Daimer had called the day before and said he wanted to transfer child support.
Daniela, tired of his constant attempts to meet with her, made it clear that she wanted no further contact. She remained firm. If he truly wanted to fulfill his responsibilities as a father, he should keep quiet. She didn’t want to see him and had no intention of giving him another chance. Yet somehow, he still managed to persuade her to compromise.
Something in his words made her change her mind, unaware that this admission would end in tragedy. That same day, just hours after Daniela’s departure, her mother received a phone call no parent should ever receive. On the other end of the line came a confession, delivered with icy indifference. Daimer admitted that he had taken Daniela’s life.
His words were cold and dry, without the slightest hint of remorse. At that moment, Janis’s world stopped. Panic gripped her. Although he had threatened something similar before, she still hoped this was just another manipulation. They contacted the police and began an urgent search of hospitals and emergency rooms.
They hoped Daniela might be injured but still alive. Their hope, however, was short-lived. That same afternoon, the police contacted Daniela’s family and urged them to come to the morgue immediately. The body of a woman had been found in a motel in downtown Barranquilla, and the description matched Daniela’s appearance.
When the mother arrived, her worst fears were confirmed. Her daughter’s body lay before her. No personal belongings or clothing were nearby. Her purse, cell phone, and clothes were missing. The first to raise the alarm were the motel staff. They remembered that Daniela had entered the building with a man that morning. At the time, this didn’t seem unusual to them. Couples regularly stayed at the motel.
Her concern only began two hours later when the man came out alone, but Daniela hadn’t left the room. According to staff, he stood quietly at the reception desk before leaving the motel. One of the employees, unsuspecting, asked him if his girlfriend would be staying longer.
He calmly replied that she would come out later, as she was supposedly still changing. Then he hurriedly left the building. Time passed, but the room remained locked and silent. Finally, the staff began knocking on the door, but no one answered. They then decided to break down the door. Inside, they found… a horrifying sight. Daniela lay on the bed, covered with a sheet.
Next to her was a large bloodstain, and a pillow had been placed over her face. Arriving police officers found the body unclothed, and a shard of glass lay on the floor. According to the evidence gathered, the attacker used this object to fatally stab Daniela in the chest and then suffocated her with the pillow.
The mother identified her daughter and immediately named Daimer as a possible perpetrator. His description was also confirmed by the motel staff. They clearly recognized the man Daniela had arrived with. Despite the available video footage and witness statements, the police did not immediately arrest him. Daniela’s family feared he might disappear or harm others.
According to them, Daimer was dangerous and unpredictable. The investigation continued. After reconstructing the events, investigators determined that Daniela and Daimer had arrived at the motel around noon. Surveillance cameras had recorded them together at the entrance, and several hours later, the only other visible image was of him carrying the woman’s bag. This footage became crucial evidence in the investigation.
Given the history of domestic violence, the police had a solid basis for identifying a motive for the crime. Based on the evidence gathered, the police officially declared Daimer the prime suspect. An arrest warrant was issued, but by that time he had already gone into hiding. Daniela’s family was devastated.
News of the tragedy spread quickly, triggering shock and grief among acquaintances and the public alike. The funeral took place on August 19, 2020. The young woman was laid to rest in one of Barranquilla’s cemeteries. During the ceremony, her mother shared memories of her daughter, recounting how vibrant and extraordinary her life had been.
The loss left a deep wound in her soul, one she struggled to bear. Those for whom Daniela had lived suffered the most. Her youngest daughter, just two years old, didn’t understand what was happening and refused to eat. Her older daughter didn’t yet fully grasp the situation but already felt her absence. The story sparked a wave of anger and grief throughout society.
People demanded that the perpetrator be punished and that better protection be provided for women in similar situations. Particularly outrageous was the fact that Daniela had asked for help more than once but received insufficient support. The media devoted considerable attention to the case.
Discussions arose not only about the crime itself, but also about problems within the system that is supposed to protect victims of domestic violence. Nevertheless, Daniela’s family also faced a wave of accusations against the young woman. Some comments on social media suggested that she was to blame because she had agreed to meet with the man who had repeatedly abused her.
These accusations were yet another blow to the already fractured family. They only intensified the pain and suffering of Daniela’s relatives, forcing them not only to cope with their loss but also with a new wave of pressure and attempts to shift the blame onto the victim herself.
Against the backdrop of public sentiment and growing attention, the country’s Attorney General’s office offered a reward of approximately $1,300 for information leading to Daimer’s arrest. Investigations and witness interviews revealed that he had contacted relatives, asked for money and clothing, and planned to go into hiding.
One of these phone calls took place in a local shop in the neighborhood where he had previously lived with Daniela. Neighbors overheard the conversation. The police were put on high alert, set up a special hotline, and appealed to the public for information. The community loudly called for help. Around the same time, Daimer’s family suddenly left the neighborhood and disappeared without a trace.
This intensified the fear and despair of Daniela’s family, who increasingly worried that the crime would go unpunished. On August 22, 2020, a few days after the funeral, Daniela’s relatives and friends held a rally outside her home. It was a peaceful but deeply emotional demonstration. People demanded justice, the punishment of the perpetrator, and an end to violence against women.
The protest was accompanied by powerful slogans:
“End impunity, end the silence, end the fear.”
The rally was organized by Daniela’s friends and her cousin, not only out of grief but also out of fear that Daimer might still be somewhere nearby and at large. Four days later, Daimer’s eldest uncle, who worked in a food warehouse, described his family’s state after the incident.
He emphasized that they, too, had become victims. Daimer’s 17-year-old grandmother and her daughters were forced to flee the house in haste for fear of reprisals. The man assured them that they were fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and sympathized with Daniela’s family. He highlighted that two children would now have to grow up without a mother and condemned his relative’s actions.
According to him, they knew nothing about Daimer’s whereabouts, but would have immediately reported him to the authorities had they found out. He insisted that they had neither helped him nor given him money or clothing. Furthermore, he expressed his willingness to maintain reasonable contact with Daniela’s family, as they had grandchildren together.
His goal, he said, was to ensure that Daimer served his sentence and did not harm anyone else. Almost three weeks after the tragedy, on September 6, 2020, something unexpected happened. Daimer was arrested, not for the crime against Daniela, but for an attempted robbery in Bogotá. When he was taken to the police station and his papers were checked, it turned out that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a serious crime related to his ex-wife’s death.
Until then, investigators didn’t know how he had traveled from Barranquilla to the capital. The only explanation was that he had taken advantage of the easing of restrictions on domestic travel and flights after the pandemic to go into hiding and evade responsibility. At that time, restrictions due to the health emergency were still in place in the country, making travel difficult. With each new piece of information, tensions rose.
Daimer had managed to remain hidden for almost three weeks, and it seemed he had already begun to believe he could evade responsibility. While his arrest brought relief to Daniela’s family, it also sparked a new wave of anxiety among those who still feared the crime might go unpunished.
At the time of his arrest, Daimer was accompanied by another criminal. Two cell phones and a gold chain belonging to Daniela were found in his possession. Particularly disturbing was the fact that he had attempted to conceal his identity by presenting a forged ID in the name of Hektor Daniel Paramarines.
It was only several hours after his arrest that investigators were able to establish his true identity. From that point on, he faced charges of theft, forgery, and the serious crime against Daniela. A virtual court hearing took place later that same day in Barranquilla. Despite numerous pieces of evidence, camera footage, witness statements, and circumstances that clearly pointed to his guilt, Daimer continued to refuse to admit his guilt.
The prosecution presented video footage showing him entering a motel with Daniela. He lingered at the reception desk and later hurriedly left the building alone. Nevertheless, he continued to deny any guilt, whereupon the court ordered him remanded in custody. It wasn’t until August 2021, already in custody, that he reached a plea deal with the prosecution and officially admitted guilt. The court sentenced him to 34 years in prison.
Although there was no full trial, the evidence gathered was more than sufficient. He was taken to prison, where he must serve his sentence. For Daniela’s family, this was at least a first moment of justice. This helped them to close this difficult chapter and focus on the future of Daniela’s daughters.
They do everything they can to ensure that the children grow up to be decent people and that the memory of their mother is preserved.
