Meet Eliseu. It’s simply unbelievable and heartbreaking to learn what this poor cat had to endure. About a month ago, he was brutally burned alive during what appeared to be a children’s game. The child in question was none other than the son of his own owner.
Despite his horrific injuries and obvious, unbearable pain, Eliseu was never taken to a veterinarian for even the slightest medical treatment. Instead, his owner callously locked him in a cold cage behind the house. There, the severely injured cat was left to fend for himself – hungry, thirsty, and terribly cold.
It is said that the owner often considered getting sleeping pills for Eliseu to finally put an end to the ordeal. But he ultimately didn’t, out of sheer fear of some tragedy. His son often called Eliseu the “war god.” The man felt no sorrow or pity for the suffering animal, but was simply afraid of the supposed god who bore the name “Eliseu.”
The saddest part of this already dark story happened just yesterday. The owner’s family moved out of the old house. They simply left Eliseu there, completely abandoned, locked up, and doomed to certain death.
But then a saving miracle occurred. I, Marilucy Pereira, found him in this abandoned, desolate state. I immediately rushed to his rescue and took Eliseu straight to an animal hospital.
Eliseu initially barely knew how he would survive. It had been such an incredibly long time since he had experienced even the slightest form of human kindness. He was clearly happy inside about being rescued, but he was far too weak to utter a single sound.
It was almost a miracle that he even managed to lick a little liquid food from a plate. He was emaciated, his skeleton clearly visible beneath his skin.
His entire small body was covered in severe burns. His eyes, in particular, had suffered terribly and were badly damaged. He was extremely fragile, as if he were made of paper-thin glass. This cat couldn’t even stand up. He lay completely motionless in one spot.
Eliseu fought desperately for his life with his very last ounce of strength. His blood sugar and body temperature were dangerously low, and he suffered from repeated severe seizures.
Every single time such an attack shook his battered body, I was firmly by his side. I stroked him gently and continuously to show him he wasn’t alone. The fear was deep inside me that if I left the room for even a second, I would lose him forever and never see him again.
The veterinarians were truly doing their absolute best. We could hardly believe it: God seemed to be hearing our desperate prayers. We begged him to keep fighting. “Hang in there, my sweet boy, hang in there, your future is beautiful,” I whispered to him again and again. “You have no idea how much you are loved.”
But their hopes were dashed. Eliseu’s condition suddenly deteriorated dramatically again. He was suffering from severe anemia and urgently needed a blood transfusion to have any chance of survival.
Unfortunately, there was no good news for us that day. Eliseus’s condition was becoming increasingly critical. We already loved him so incredibly much. In that darkest moment, he suddenly looked at me. He gazed deep into my eyes, straight into my soul.
I decided to capture this beautiful, intimate moment forever in my heart and in a photograph. His condition remained critically unchanged afterward. The doctors changed his antibiotics. Everyone knew: if his body didn’t respond to the medication this time, Eliseu would leave us forever in just a few hours.
He thankfully felt no more pain, and he wasn’t suffering at that moment. He was simply an innocent animal who so desperately wanted to live, but whose deepest wish might not be fulfilled. Yet, in his own quiet way, he told me that he wanted to keep fighting. And we promised him that we would fight that battle with him to the bitter end. Thousands of prayers were sent to heaven for Eliseu that day.
The next day, Eliseu finally brought us some very good news. A tiny spark of hope flickered. Eliseu actually managed to sit up on his own for a full twenty seconds. He even ate a little more than the day before. A true miracle had happened. From now on, we were determined to continue documenting this highly emotional story and record every step of the way.
These were Eliseus’ very first slow, but completely deliberate reactions. He was practically trying to cling to me. He wanted to tell us something, but his small voice was so gentle and quiet that we could barely hear it.
Day twenty of his journey dawned. The best was still ahead, but Eliseus’s small steps forward already made us incredibly happy. We were on the right track, even though countless risks and obstacles still lay ahead.
The entire medical team stayed by his side all day. Eliseu desperately needed some morning sunshine to recharge and regain his zest for life. “Stay strong, Eliseu,” we told him. “You’re doing great.”
Day twenty-seven: After almost a whole month of intensive, loving care, Eliseu had gained a mere two grams. He now weighed exactly 2.86 kilograms. Eliseu was still safely in the specialized clinic. Many people had already inquired about him, and the nursing staff and everyone involved promised to visit Eliseu soon.
Day forty: Eliseu had undergone remarkable changes. He had become significantly stronger and was already able to walk on his own for a few minutes. Nevertheless, he still needed a great deal of help and support from the dedicated medical staff for his daily life.
Day fifty: It was an incredibly emotional moment when we could share Eliseus’s very first real steps with the world. Little by little, he learned to live again. He had to completely relearn his senses and his natural instincts. It was a completely new world for him; everything around him was new and exciting.
Day sixty: He took new, courageous steps. For the first time, he felt the gentle touch and the fresh scent of green grass. He grew more and more confident and steady on his feet. We were full of faith and hope that he would soon be running completely free through all this greenery.
Day sixty-five: More and more steps followed, his gait improved noticeably day by day.
Day seventy-one: Eliseu had his very first physiotherapy session. He was still a little unsteady with the exercises, but he was now thoroughly enjoying every single one of his meals.
Day seventy-five: Eliseu now weighed a proud 4.19 kilograms. He had made tremendous, incredible progress that no one would have thought possible at the beginning.
Day eighty-two: With each new day, his legs grew stronger. We were overjoyed whenever we heard him murmur or meow softly. Seeing his little eyes slowly open again was pure bliss for us.
Day ninety: His weight had risen to a wonderful 5.1 kilograms.
Day one hundred: Eliseu was now frequently the focus of television programs. All the charity channels reported on his story and focused on his incredible recovery. He patiently posed for photos with his many sponsors and supporters all day long. Nevertheless, Eliseu still had to remain in the hospital because his eyes were still severely damaged. His eyesight was extremely poor and caused us great concern.
Day 190: Eliseu was now even receiving acupuncture treatments. We searched tirelessly for the very best therapy to bring him relief.
Day two hundred and ten: Eliseu ended another day spreading his boundless love throughout the world. It was perhaps one of the most emotional days of our entire lives. Many students wept bitterly as they heard the whole story and truly understood everything Eliseu had to endure. I, too, couldn’t hold back my tears that day.
Day 240: It was a quiet Sunday, and I had to work. Afterwards, Eliseu and I took a short, peaceful nap on the living room floor. But unfortunately, we also had to deliver some very sad and difficult news that day.
Eliseu’s eyes could no longer be saved. We had to make the difficult decision to perform surgery to remove them completely and thus finally put an end to his chronic pain.
The operation was thankfully very successful. Eliseu also showed incredible recovery rates afterwards and proved once again his indomitable, iron will.
Day two hundred and sixty: The blind but cheerful Eliseu wished all his supporters a merry and peaceful Christmas.
Day 350: We took loving close-ups and slow-motion videos of him to literally melt people’s hearts with his charming, slightly grumpy meows.
Day four hundred: It had been an unimaginably long journey full of difficult challenges. But Eliseu had proven time and again that he deserved this life more than anyone else in the world.
Day 450: The most wonderful and best thing had finally happened. Eliseu had made a full recovery. He was finally allowed to leave the hospital, go home, and from now on be cared for with boundless love.
Day five hundred: We have grown so incredibly fond of Eliseu over all this time. Every time this brave cat hugs you, it feels as if the whole world stands still for a brief moment of pure joy. I have been by his side for five hundred days, and my promise never to leave him again will last forever.
